Consciousness Runs Deep

Click  here  to view the video. This video was very interesting and artistic, which I think was interesting and adds to the message of the video. When the man was walking on the street he didn't stop to pick up the trash that was on the ground, but after he learned to appreciate the world for what it is and what it does for us, while he was out fishing he picked up the trash he found. I looked up the company that made the video, and it turns out it isn't a company at all but, a nonprofit organization, called Soul River, that helps bring veterans and inner city youth together to appreciate the beauty of nature. Strengthening their relationships with nature, they are informed on the environment and trained in outdoor skills and activities and informed to become advocates for conservation. I do not think that this is a marketing ploy, but instead a video to show what their work is intended to do and make a difference in people's lives. Fort Bragg Trip Summer 2017 En...

The Secret Life of Mountain Lions

Image
Click  here  to view the video. Family and dependent care is not a concept of only human life. Many species, including mountain lions, follow the ideal that children are to be raised by their mother until they are able to go off on their own. For mountain lions, this is normally only until they are about 2 years old. These families are the backbone to the success of mountain lion's survival. In this video, you will quickly become attached to this family of cougars and understand their dynamic. I personally learned through watching this video about how fathers and mothers can be reunited without any violence, which is something I would have never expected. I thought that it was common for fathers to attack other units regardless of whether he knew who they were or not. Watching this video, I also became more angry over humanity's concept of trophy hunting, which is something that I have always been very passionately against. This video has made me realize that this is somet...

The Life Cycle of a Salmon

Image
Salmon begin their life cycle with spawning, where eggs are fertilized in cool water by their father and then covered in gravel to protect them by their mom. They will then migrate away from where they were born. They will smolt which will allow them to transition to salt water fish. They will then live in the salt water areas. They will then migrate back up the river where they will reproduce. They stop eating when they choose to reproduce which causes their health to deteriorate. Then they will soon die. After their death, their carcass is not wasted, it will return back into the ecosystem as a resource of some other kind. One thing I found very interesting about the lifecycle of the salmon is that they will return to where they were born in order to reproduce, then the mothers will remain by their nests until her children hatch but she will then stay in that same river where she will die. We need to be concerned with salmon being labeled as threatened or endangered because salm...

The Story of Bottled Water

Image
The video being discussed is here:  https://vimeo.com/10441794 Where does that single use water bottle that you threw our just yesterday end up? In the recycling sent to a local recycle plant or maybe just thrown into a local landfill where it will sit for the next millennia? Would you have ever thought it ends up in a plant in India where it is neither recycled nor thrown into a landfill? Instead some of our local recyclables are transported across the ocean into foreign countries where it is left for them to handle. This video expands on the issue of single use plastic bottles and the reality of what the water inside of them is and where the trash really goes. Check out this video to educate yourself and others about if it is really worth it financially or environmentally worth it to purchase those single use bottles of filtered tap water.

My Favorite Nature Place

Image
I've always loved the beach, until I realized how absolutely terrified of water I truly am. When I went to the beach, I realized I wouldn't even put my toes in the water without being close to panic. So, I have to conclude that even though I love the environment of the beach, it simply can't be my favorite nature place. But, I've also been very fond of hiking in the Marin headlands the view is so beautiful, the air is so fresh but then I'll look down. Well, I hate to say it, but the water surrounding the cliffs... it terrifies me a little too. So I guess that the headlands, and other cliffs overlooking water can't be my favorite place either. So, what can be my favorite nature place if it can't be anywhere close to water? Thats easy, deep in a lush forest. Growing up my family would take vacations to Fort Bragg, and unfortunately for me that included a lot of beach trips to the sea glass beach (which I am NOT fond of for more reasons than just the water)...
